History of Mother's Day
Credit for the Mother's Day holiday in the United States is attributed
to Ms. Anna Jarvis, who dedicated most of her life to promoting the
holiday. Her inspiration was her own mother's untiring dedication to raise
eleven children. On the second anniversary of her mother's death, the
second Sunday in May, Ms. Jarvis convinced her mother's parish in West
Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day. She decorated the church with her
mother's favorite flowers, white carnations to symbolize the sweetness,
purity and endurance of a mother's love. They are still used today; red
carnations represent living mothers, and white ones stand for those who
have passed away. Following this first success, Ms. Jarvis and her
supporters continued their efforts by writing to politicians, businessmen,
and ministers. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to officially
recognize Mother's Day, and a year later, almost every state observed it
as well. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the
Mother's Day holiday as the second Sunday in May.
History of Father's Day
Jerry Wilson published a short story about the history of father's Day.
The story is summarized here. Sonora Dodd, of Washington state, was one of
the first people who had the idea of a "Father's Day." She
thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day
sermon in 1909. Sonora's father, William Smart, a widower after his wife
died giving birth to their sixth child, selflessly raised the newborn and
his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington.
Sonora as an adult realized her father was a courageous, selfless and
loving man. She chose to hold her father's birthday, June 19th to
celebrate the first Father's Day in Spokane, Washington in 1910. President
Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day,
then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation
declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as the Father's Day.

The important thing about my mom is that she
loves me no matter what
She blocks me like a force field
She helps me if I'm struggling
She is always around me like the air
She takes care of me when I am sick
She serves me food for every meal
And she is always proud of me
But the most important thing about my mom is
that she loves me no matter what!
