We witness a lot of changes in the homes from appliances and building materials' point of views. With broadband, the services ought to come into play. Will 'smart home' be around the corner? Will it evolve with a set of drivers? Will the traditional home businesses and/or industries lead the way? Or will some innovative new Internet service companies develop a sensible business model to buy the 'smart product components' and wrap them with services and offer them as 'smart home solutions'? From a research scientist's point of view focusing on application solution, I see a number of plausible scenarios but I don't see any corporate giant leaping into these scenarios. Judging on the evolution paths of telecommunication industry, utility industry and home appliances industry, the 'smart home' will remain far in a distant future, not even Bill Gates can get one soon. IBM is right about information technology being an essential ingredient but no one seems to have a clear solution model to launch including the Big Blue themselves. Smart home business model is where any large cap company should pay attention to, F, GE, GM, HD, HP, IBM, IGT, INTC, MRK, PFE, PG, PPG, TWX, even smaller companies such as TOL, ..... Unfortunately, we don't have many visionary CEOs any more.
