Years ago when Dr. Chang was visiting Hong Kong strolling through its shopping districts, he was amazed that there were so many gift shops, cosmetic shops and jewelry shops congregated on the same street or location. At first, he was overwhelmed by it and thought how could so many stores compete and survive in the same business, especially each store employs so many sales persons. Then he was told by a shop owner, it was a simple math. If you had 5 million people visiting say the jewelry street every year and you had 50 jewelry stores, each store on average would get 100,000 visitors, that would be about 300 shoppers a day per store or 30 per hour. The economical beauty is that the stores don't have to spend much marketing and advertising dollars to get the shoppers going there. So the merchants' overhead was low. They would rather pay the high rent to be at the same location with other competitors so long they have the goods to sell.
